How do I make my website mobile friendly for search engines?

This article applies to:

  • Web Designer 10 Premium & above
  • Designer Pro X10 & above

If you have registered your website with Google Webmaster Tools, you may have received an email about your website not being optimized for mobile users. This could be for a number of reasons but more than likely it would be because your website doesn't contain any mobile variants, or the mobile variants you do have are not suitable for mobile devices (see below list for examples). If you need to add a mobile variant, see the below section. If you own Web Designer 10 or version 9 and below, we would highly recommend upgrading to either Web Designer 10 Premium or Designer Pro X10 if you want your website to be optimized for mobile viewing.

From Google Webmasters: A page is eligible for the "mobile-friendly" label if it meets the following criteria as detected by Googlebot:

  • Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
  • Uses text that is readable without zooming
  • Sizes content to the screen so users don't have to scroll horizontally or zoom
  • Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped

The Designs Gallery has many templates which meet this criteria and pass the Google mobile friendly test. If your website doesn't pass the test, you can look to any one of the examples with the "(R)" symbol that contain mobile variations (or of course create a mobile variant for your existing site that does pass the test).
